Official competency definition
Critical thinking and problem-solving are the cognitive engines of business development. While other competencies focus on interpersonal skills (EQ) or business knowledge (acumen), this competency is about the quality of thought that underpins every strategic decision. It is the ability to analyze complex situations, evaluate information objectively, identify the root causes of problems, and generate creative and effective solutions.

What the competency covers
This competency combines structured analysis with evidence and creativity. It helps the BD professional identify what is actually happening, assess the relevant choices and design practical responses that stand up to scrutiny.
Apply frameworks such as SWOT, Porter's Five Forces, the Ansoff Matrix and PESTLE to organise complex situations and compare options.
Separate symptoms from causes, challenge conventional wisdom and validate the assumptions that underpin BD choices.
Define the question, assess data quality, analyse evidence and turn the findings into clear business insight.
Generate, evaluate and prioritise options according to strategic fit, feasibility, impact and risk.
Use divergent and convergent thinking to create, test, learn from and improve innovative BD solutions.
