Official competency definition
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is the ability to perceive, understand, manage, and use emotions. In the context of business development, where success hinges on building relationships, influencing stakeholders, and navigating complex interpersonal dynamics, EQ is not a soft skill but a core competency. It is the engine of trust, the foundation of influence, and the compass for navigating the human side of business.

Competency architecture
The BDA BoCK defines Emotional Intelligence through three sub-competencies. Together, they help a Business Development professional manage their own response, navigate emotionally charged moments and establish trust over time.
Understand personal emotions and use that awareness to manage interactions, influence constructively and build effective relationships.
Prepare for difficult dialogue, listen to understand, acknowledge feelings and move from blame towards a constructive path forward.
Develop credibility, reliability and intimacy while keeping the stakeholder's long-term interests ahead of self-orientation.
What the competency covers
Emotional Intelligence enables a BD professional to recognise what is happening beneath the surface, adapt their response and create the relational conditions in which collaborative decisions and long-term partnerships can succeed.
Recognise personal emotions, strengths, limitations and triggers; remain composed and make more deliberate decisions under pressure.
Read emotional cues, understand differing perspectives and recognise the unspoken needs that influence stakeholder behaviour.
Use awareness of self and others to communicate clearly, influence ethically, resolve conflict and foster collaboration.
Clarify goals, listen without defensiveness, acknowledge feelings and make space for a practical, respectful resolution.
Build credibility, reliability and intimacy through honest communication, consistent conduct, discretion and a low self-orientation.
Examination alignment
Emotional Intelligence belongs to the Behavioural Competencies domain, which carries 45% of total examination weight. The individual competency is weighted at 6% across the BDA-CP® and BDA-SCP® examinations.
