Official competency definition

The commercial judgement that makes Business Development decisions viable.

Business acumen is the keenness and speed in understanding and dealing with a business situation in a manner that is likely to lead to a good outcome. For BD professionals, it is the foundational competency that enables them to identify viable opportunities, assess their strategic and financial implications, and structure deals that create sustainable value. Without strong business acumen, BD professionals risk pursuing opportunities that are strategically misaligned, financially unviable, or operationally impractical.

Competency architecture

Three connected dimensions of Business Acumen

The BDA BoCK defines Business Acumen through three sub-competencies. Together, they establish the analytical rigour required to identify viable opportunities, test their value and recommend the right course of action.

Understanding Business Models

Analyse how organisations create, deliver and capture value; use that understanding to identify opportunities and structure commercially aligned deals.

02

Financial Literacy for BD Professionals

Read financial information, evaluate opportunity value, support business cases and communicate in commercially credible terms.

03

Risk and Opportunity Evaluation

Evaluate both upside and downside systematically, balance optimism with realism and make risk-intelligent recommendations.
